Our hotel was within walking distance of Old Jerusalem, so with a little free
time and a map in hand we headed out to see for ourselves what it looked
like behind the walls. I loved the pedestrian crossing signs.
The street vendors were cooking some awesome smelling food.
This guy was making shish kabobs and they were tempting. I
wasn't quite brave enough to eat the street food though. I had
already seen too many sick people around me and I wasn't interested
in joining that crowd.
We loved the people watching,
the shopping,
(I bought one of these!!! An oil lamp from the
Herodian period. It's my treasure from Jerusalem.)
How about earrings made from Roman glass?
I decided I'd take a pair of those too. He crafted
them as I watched. Sorry, no pictures of the final product,
but take my word for it. They're lovely.
and the food!
The breads were especially good.
I enjoyed trying the middle eastern spice, za'tar on this bread.
The spice shops were fun and the place to pick
up a little za'tar and saffron to take home. The
aroma of this space was intoxicating.
The saffron was so inexpensive!
The vendor is burning frankincense so I can smell the aroma.
I've never seen dehydrated yogurt. Have you?
I couldn't get over the size and abundance of the pomegranates.
We really only see this in our markets during the holiday
season and they are expensive. One of the best treats we
had was fresh pomegranate juice. Yum!
At first, the sight of armed guards on the streets
was a little disturbing, but we quickly became
accustomed to it and didn't really notice them.
(Quick, take a picture when they're not looking.
They don't really like to have their pictures taken.)
Take a look at this clip Sherri took while
we were in the Old City. You will feel
like you were right there with us. Notice the
call to prayer and watch the people going
about their daily routine. It makes me
want to be there again.
I really loved the Old City.
*MYOF Goal #25 - Visit Israel.
Beautiful photos! You have certainly developed great skills!!! When are we going to have a Pita Bread making class? My house...... bring Sherri
ReplyDeletejNae - true confession. Most of these photos were taken by Sherri. She did a great job, didn't she? I kinda liked having my own photographer who would take pictures of anything I asked her to. The pita bread class....how i wished you lived a little closer. I'm going to give it a try soon though. I hope it works out for me.
ReplyDeleteLove the post... Jerusalem was one of my favorite areas that we visited. I LOVED the old city when we would go down and walk around. Listening to the video just took me back. Yes jNae, I'm on for the pita bread making class!
