Picnics and Baby Goats

One of my favorite places to spend the afternoon is Carl Sandburg Home.
I love everything about the place -  the old home, the grounds, the lake and
the barn.  This week, I borrowed my favorite five year old and we took off to
explore.  The hike from the parking area to the house will get your heart
pumping, but there are plenty of places to stop and rest along the way,
This was Kelly's first visit to the farm and she was excited about everything.
Most exciting was the prospect of seeing those baby goats that I had been
talking about.
It was worth the walk up the hill when we saw this sign.  We were getting close.
I loved the gardens and Kelly squealed with delight at the scarecrow.
Red is the perfect color for barns.  I love this one.
The main attraction!
The babies must have been happy to see us because they received lots of attention.

Isn't this the cutest thing ever?

These little kids were so entertaining.
We even got to watch them nurse from mama.
There were also chickens to watch.
When we got hungry, we spread the red and white checked picnic cloth on the
ground, under a shade tree and ate our lunches.  Kelly's mom packed her these
cute little kabobs .
After lunch, we read books about goats
and some of Carl Sandburg's Rootabaga Stories.
These are the silliest stories about a host of characters.  This one was about
Papa and Mama Huckabuck and their pony faced girl named Pony Pony.
They have an amazing adventure with popcorn in Nebraska.  After one last
visit to say goodbye to the goats...
we hiked back down the hill and stopped at the lake to watch the fish.

Carl Sandburg home - the perfect place to spend a summer afternoon.
We are already planning our next trip.

*Goal #3 - Do something fun with a friend each month

  1. What fun! I have never been there but after this I think I will pay a visit the next time we're in town.

  2. I can't believe I lived in Flat Rock for eight years and I never did go to the Carl Sandburg home! I was just too busy running around with the kids to enjoy a lot of the things Flat Rock and surrounding areas have to offer. Now I do have the time, though. I will get up to the mountains more often, and hopefully this year. :)

  4. That's a great place to have a picnic and a hike. We love going over there!! The house is fun to go through, too. Looks like the Sandburgs just stepped out for a moment.
